I’ve never had an SXSW attendee badge. I stay in the periphery — on the streets — seeking out the numerous free events. I have no desire to be a mover and a shaker in the entertainment, tech, movie, and music industries. I figure it’s one of the benefits of being an Austinite. To experience and document the event without officially attending.
I’m not the only one. Others do the same thing. I met this group of the badge-less at the Dell Experience — all but one are local. We are all having a drink on Dell’s dime. If you think of it, promotions work for people with or without badges. I believe there is a loose coupling between SXSW attendees and the consumers of these products.
That’s why I was critical of CNN+ with their restrictive marketing. Kudos to Porsche, Dell, DC Comics, and many others that opened their doors to all who were interested.
Note: I just released the June issue of my monthly photography magazine (aka my monthly newsletter). This is something completely different from my blog. So, if you subscribe to my blog posts, you’ll like my free monthly magazine too.
In this issue I talked about my big trip to New York City. That’s in addition to all my other thoughts and observations about photography. Signup for the next issue.
