Katz’s Delli is not fancy. Most delicatessens aren’t. However, this is the kind of place I love. Great food and unfussy interiors — kick back and enjoy eating.
It was brimming with activity as I probably arrived at the peak near noon. The seating is in the middle, to the left, and back around the corner to the right. You stand in an unstructured line on the right to order, where the cutters slice and craft sandwiches before you.
The process is strange for newbies. Everyone who enters receives a ticket, which you must keep, even if you don’t order anything — they tally ordered items on it. I was confused until I remembered their unique method from my visit many years ago.
The system seems old-fashioned, but after over a century of business, I’m sure they know what they are doing. There’s a feeling of timeless tradition that permeates the establishment.

Most grocery store and stand alone delis in New Jersey still use the ticket system. It would be chaos without it.
I didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing!
