This year, a dramatic part of the Porsche SXSW exhibit was joint marketing with the new Transformers movie. Yes, yet another one. A search on IMDB indicated six Transformer movies and a slew of TV shows. The latest one, Transformers: Rise of Beasts, is scheduled for theatrical release on June 9, 2023. This franchise started with toys from the 1980s, which spawned comic books, TV Shows, video games, and movies — who would’ve thought.
I’ve watched a few movies and know enough that Optimus Prime is the leader of the good guys. This statue of him was impressive, but I’m sure it’s not life-size — it needs to be even bigger.
Optimus Primal is new for the upcoming movie. Its name gave me a chuckle — cute. I’m not sure how the mechanical ape plays into the story, but I’m sure the Hollywood writers have devised a “plausible” story. So why are these displayed at a Porsche exhibit? They used one in the movie, the topic of yesterday’s post.
I’m not a Porsche loyalist, but how do they feel about this? Does Porsche’s reputation diminish with an association with a derivative series of movies based on toys? On the other hand, perhaps these giant movie statues added needed SXSW visual interest. Unfortunately, the Porsche cars this year weren’t nearly as interesting as last year. More on that tomorrow.
