Empty Restaurant, Musée d’Orsay – Paris, France

In contrast to the bustling cafe I featured yesterday, the restaurant at the Musée d’Orsay was empty. I’m assuming it wasn’t open.

However, it’s an exciting space that piqued my curiosity, at least for a few minutes. This elaborate room seemed out of place with the architecture of the main hall looking much too ornate and traditional. It may have been an upscale waiting area for the passengers of the former train station.

The table and chairs also look fascinating, both out of place and eclectically harmonious at the same time. The lightness of the table and chairs offers a playful contrast to the heavy ornamentation and the seriously elaborate chandeliers. As fancy as this space looks — especially for the United States — it is par for the course in Paris. In my short visit, I encountered many equally or more over-the-top rooms.

  1. In our visit this time, the fancy restaurant was open with lots of customers. As you say it’s an over the top and beautiful place. I had forgotten about it but remembered immediately as we walked up to the hall way outside which was not long today but had a very long line on our previous visit.

  2. We stopped for coffee and a cookie. It’s such a special place. It feels like a brief respite in old French aristocracy!
