3 seconds and 21mm

Dog Walking - Chur, Switzerland

Dog Walking – Chur, Switzerland

I liked the view down this street and how the walls frame the tower-like structure. I stopped for a few minutes to capture people walking past — a lovely architecture and street photograph rolled into one. The dog walker made for a nice foreground element.

I shot the first picture at a 49mm equivalent. Three seconds later, I captured the image below after zooming to a 70mm equivalent.

As you can tell, there is quite a difference. A few seconds here and a quick zoom there, the scene changes substantially — that’s the essence of photography, especially on the street. Notice how much closer the dog is to the person. Yes, perhaps the dog had closed the gap within those three seconds. However, you can see that everything is more compressed in the second image — that’s the telephoto compression I often talk about.

Neither picture is better or worse. You may prefer the first photo, but I like the second one since everything is tighter. One post-processing note: I did apply perspective correction to both images. Therefore, the originals are slightly wider than shown.
