Capitol Framed – Havana, Cuba

I’ve given you peeks of the Capitol in my previous street photographs, growing larger in the background as we got closer. Finally, we have the center dome fully visible, framed by the neighborhood buildings. The context makes it a lot more interesting than the building itself.

I shot closer perspectives on subsequent walks, but I never went up to the front steps to take a shot. Someone in the group was unsure whether it was allowed, so I didn’t bother. I kept in the back of my head that we were in a foreign country with different laws.

This picture is perfectly satisfactory for me, and I never felt like I compromised my artistic vision. In fact, I generally feel more cautious when shooting in the United States.

  1. Thanks for this series on glimpses of the Capitol. Really like this image and the way you have captured the glow of light from the top of the dome. It is possible to enter the Capitol ( with payment of the correct amount) and stand under the dome. Really interesting perspective!
