Art at Almacenes San Jose – Havana, Cuba

You might recall that a month ago, I had a three-post mini-series on Almacenes San Jose, an industrial space turned shopping mall near the waterfront. The first floor was all souvenirs and trinkets, and that’s what I covered. However, the second floor featured a giant space with a huge selection of artwork for sale.

I only had a 50mm prime with me, and I didn’t shoot a wide scene. However, you can see row after row of artwork on display, as seen above. Most of the art was derivative and nothing special. Some looked similar to the stuff I saw in the regular stores closer to the center of Old Havana. However, there were a few notable exceptions.

Here’s an example of something different from the typical stuff I saw at Almacenes San Jose. This colorful abstract spoke to me, and I’ll talk more about it tomorrow.

Off to the side was this setup, which looked like an art installation instead of something for sale. I wasn’t entirely sure what it was, but it was clearly different from the others and seemed non-commercial.

This was my second visit to this place, right after my portrait session with Kamy. This was the second-to-last day in Cuba as I wound down my activities. I walked here alone with the compact Sony A7C, paired with the TTartisan 50mm f/2, a manual-focus lens.
