I’m proud to announce that Issue 84 of my fabulous photography magazine is hot off the digital presses (via email). An article and a photo essay about a gem of a small town I absolutely loved in Greece, thoughts and observations about my first year of retirement, the most recent Substack posts, and more. We splurged on one event during Fan Week: the Stars of the Open celebrity tennis matches. So while entering the grounds and watching the pre-tournament games were free, you had to pay extra to get into this nighttime show. It was about $150 per person. For that entrance fee, we had four sets of celebrity matches, which were shortened to a set.

The biggest names, for me, were from the first match. Coco Gauff & Andre Agassi vs. Venus Williams & John McEnroe. All four are famous, A-list tennis stars. John McEnroe, in particular, is of my era. I remember watching a match between McEnroe and Borg back at Madison Square Garden in 1981. It was a tremendous game, but it was going on too long, and I had to leave early because I had high school the next day.

This is the best I could do for a close-up with my D-Lux 8 at 75mm, uncropped. Still, it’s possible to identify the silver-haired man as John McEnroe. He played great tennis but discovered he was only 66. I guess he looked older than he was.

The next match featured Andy Roddick, who has an Austin, Texas, connection. I pulled out to a 26mm framing, and you can see the stadium’s size. We had pretty good seats near the front.
