I had a blast at Precision Camera University (PCU) this year, where I shot behind the scenes. I shot like crazy throughout the day and into the night — at official classes as well as the unofficial get togethers, after hours. It’s all fun and I particularly love it when I shoot a candid that captures the essence.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I used four cameras. From compacts, to micro 4/3 to full frame mirrorless, the cameras were very different. But looking though my selects, after a week and a half, the images blur together. The cameras and lenses matter less, rather it’s the moment, the framing and the emotion that count.

There are signs, of course. The Sony RX100 IV compact, with its smaller 1 inch sensor, has more depth of field. The Olympus micro 4/3 has a 3×4 rather than a 2×3 aspect ratio. In good light they all do well. At the extremes, like in low light, the Sony A7s II excels, but does it truly shine if I weren’t pixel peeping? Yes, but not as much as you might think, full screen on a 27” monitor.

I’m happy with the cross-section of images I gave to Precision Camera, 143 in all. Out of those, I picked 19 for this post, just to give you a feel for those 3 days. I wonder if I have a discernible style. Is there a consistency that unifies, despite the different camera types and focal lengths? You tell me.
