I’ve enjoyed using a simple setup lately. The Olympus PEN-F and a 50mm equivalent lens, along with a retro black and white look. I’ve posted a couple of photo essays in this style, documenting Eeyore’s Birthday Party as well as the Chinese New Year Celebrations. Today, some scenes from this year’s livestock show at Rodeo Austin.
It was unusually quiet as I enter the large building that hosts the livestock show. What I didn’t realize was that they do a series of shows, of different types of animals, throughout the rodeo event. I was there, late afternoon on a lazy Sunday, as they were wrapping up. Unlike my previous year’s visits, most of the stalls were eerily empty. Even so, I did capture some activity during an awards ceremony as well as a few visitors. I found that with some observation, there’s always details to capture.
I enjoy documenting a lifestyle that’s foreign to me, even when it happens in my own city. It may not be exotic as traveling to the other side of the world, but the premise remains the same. I also like the timeless look of these grainy black and whites and there’s no obvious fashion or technology to give the year away.
