For all my photos of streetcars I’ve posted from New Orleans, I didn’t ride on very many of them. Most of my tourist destinations were in walking distance of the hotel. However, when we visited the Garden District, I got a chance to take an extended trip. The following is what I shot out the window as we rode the St. Charles streetcar back.
I’m not too embarrassed to say that I was probably like a kid on his first ride on a train. I was eagerly making snaps out the window because, every few minutes, something interesting attracted my attention. It’s a testament to how much detail New Orleans has. On the other hand, I think an average city, and certainly the suburbs, doesn’t hold much visual appeal.
I was using a wide-angle lens on the Olympus PEN-F. I shot in my usually super contrasty black and white JPEG mode, and for the last image, I didn’t even seen the man in the frame. Afterwards, when processing the RAW file, and lifting the shadows, he emerged. I like how the window frame almost creates two different images within this single photograph.
