Artist Portrait: Marty Lewis

One of the best parts of attending EAST, the East Austin Studio Tour, is to meet the artists — unlike a museum where the artist is typically not available or may not even be alive. I made a few portraits of the artists that I had a chance to talk to. First up is Marty Lewis who works in mixed media.

I actually met Marty twice and photographed him both on Saturday and Sunday. The first time, he was sporting a sky blue suit painted with tulips. I took this portrait the next day. And, though this suit is not quite as dramatic, I prefer today’s pose and expression.

Part of making a good portrait, I think, is to make a connection with the person, if only for a few minutes. Meeting Marty a couple of times sure helped. I don’t know Marty very well, but this portrait of him seems to express his personality.

Marty Lewis’ work can be found on his Instagram.
