Apparently, turkey races is a thing. Something that I never saw before, even during my multiple visits to Rodeo Austin. A crowded tent attracted my friend and I, sensing a photo opportunity.
We weren’t disappointed. It’s not a serious sport, of course. Just some fun entertainment. A search on the net revealed a turkey race YouTube video from a California fair, so this isn’t only a Texas thing. The RC truck is loaded with turkey feed and the turkeys follow it around the track; at least that’s the way it’s supposed to work. Unsurprisingly, the birds seemed confused at times. These California turkeys seemed better organized, however.
I often say that part of the attraction for going to the Rodeo is to see a different world. And, you don’t have to travel long distances to see something unfamiliar. Sure this is in Austin, but a subculture that’s unlike my own.
You don’t see this stuff at SXSW in downtown Austin. Through, you never know. I’m sure those big companies will do anything for attention to promote their newest software, TV show, or technology platform. Perhaps some turkey races will do the trick.
