Oddly, there’s a video arcade on East 6th Street amongst the gritty bars. But in reality, this arcade is also a bar. One that taps into the retro gaming interest and conveniently ties into the demographic that grew up with these games. 6th Street might be the most capitalistic street in Austin — every establishment completes vigorously for the tourist and college crowd dollar. Each one has a different theme to entice their potential customers.
The color and lights of this place attract my street photography eye and I made a conventional photo up top. It’s a perfectly acceptable, well-exposed image, I suppose. Captured at peak action of a woman shooting her shotgun. But conventional is boring. There’s nothing special about it.
Here’s an alternative, unconventional take of the same scene. Framed among the reflections, lights, and incongruous distractions, the picture takes more exploration to decode. The subject shooter is clearly visible, but everything else becomes a jumble of indoor vs outdoor when I created the picture through the window. There is a dreaminess that I like.
