If you look at yesterday’s black and white “street photo” that I made inside the Lalitha Mahal hotel, you will notice a texture on the wall to the left. Those are ornate metal screens fitted between the pillars.

If you shoot through those screens and focus on the hotel grounds, they form a texture over the image, as you can see above. Changing the aperture will alter the screen’s visibility. I used an f2.5 aperture, but with an f1.4, the metalwork will become less prominent. I opted for something in between.

On the other hand, if I focus on the screen, the pattern becomes the dominant subject. It will look the same when using a larger aperture, but the background will become more blurry.

These were the little bits of detailed I caught as I strolled through the palace.
