It struck me that this row of buildings looks like a little village — a village in the middle of a big city. This is yet another scene from an ethnic neighborhood in Singapore. At this point, I was a lot closer to the heart of Little India than Arab Street, where I began my personal architectural photo walk.
These colonial buildings — while rich in earth tones — aren’t nearly as colorful as the other architecture I recently featured. In fact, objectively, these structures look rather shabby with mold-covered walls and plants growing out of cracks. However, I like the way they look.
It’s all about the character and balance for me. These buildings are honest in their usage — not trying to be overly grand.
