Ward Village Architecture – Honolulu, Hawaii

Shifting from the colorful, touristy, well-known Hilton Hawaiian Village to the new Ward Village development. I’ve talked about Ward at the beginning of the year, featuring a Whole Foods which is always a marker for upscale residential development.

Ward Village is located between the massive Ala Moana Shopping Center and the Kaka’ako industrial area. It will eventually grow to nearly a dozen high-rise condos within a highly-landscaped park-like area.

The first several towers were either complete or being developed during my 2021 visit. The architecture is brimming with elaborate curves to make it look fancy. It’s a far cry from the boxy, utilitarian buildings of the 70s and 80s. In this mini-series, a few architectural observations, in a contrasty black and white.
