Facade, Grand Central Terminal – New York, New Yorkk

There may be a better vantage point to capture the facade of the main entrance for Grand Central Terminal, but that would require more investigation than I was willing to do. An elevated roadway leads to the second level of this iconic train station, blocking a clear view of the front. You can see that roadway on the bottom left of the frame.

Instead, I was far enough back to include the main clock and ornamentation compressed with the details of the surrounding city, such as the buildings and the traffic light. What results is a less obvious view of the building’s front. I thought I used a decent amount of zoom to create this compressed view, but surprisingly, I shot this at a 48.8mm equivalent. Which means, this is pretty much the view a person will see from that spot.

The building behind the ornate structure is the Met Life building, which I always think of as the Old Pan Am building. Do people even remember what Pan Am was? It was one of the early iconic airlines that went out of business in 1991. The building officially changed its name to Met Life in 1992, even though the insurance carrier had owned it since 1981.
