I made this photograph at the same place as yesterday’s, at the Vortex during a Drink and Click event. It’s not one of my portraits, as you can see. It was a quick grab shot — a street photograph — as I was passed through the area. I love the light on her face.
I’m always looking to document bits of Austin; images that are of this time. Ten years ago, when I first became serious about photography, I would have missed this photo. Both because I wouldn’t have seen it and because my technical skills were sub par. It makes me happy when I see something, successfully capture it and quickly move on. It’s a very different type of photography than making portraits.
Food trucks are very popular in Austin and maybe that’s the same in other U.S. cities. When I first arrived twenty-eight years ago, that wasn’t the case. But in Philadelphia, where I went to school, we had them, even back in the mid-80s. There was a food truck called Sophie’s which made my favorite cheesestakes, run by a Greek family. Boy, what I’ll give to eat one of those original Philadelphia delicacies.
