7th Avenue – New York, New York

I’m now at the corner of 7th Avenue and 45th Street. Though possibly the center of Times Square, it’s just a sliver of the greater Times Square district. 7the Avenue is the primary road that runs through this area.

Years ago, Broadway also was open to vehicular traffic, which cut diagonally across at this intersection — it was a mess. In 2009, following an increase in traffic accidents, Broadway was temporarily closed to vehicles. The resulting pedestrian-only area was so popular that they made the change permanent.

The city transformed Broadway from 42nd to 47th streets into a pedestrian area with specialty paving and benches. I think it further boosted the popularity of Times Square. As you’ll see over the next few posts, it was remarkably crowded.
