The Ritz-Carlson Residences in Waikiki, which I mentioned a week ago, is upscale and modern. However, nothing quite beats the original. The Moana Surfrider is the first hotel built in Waikiki. Known originally has the Moana hotel, which opened its doors in 1901.
There is a long and complicated owner history and a series of additions over the years. It’s all chronicled in detailed on this post on Wikipedia.
There was some ill-planned modernization in the past. Which, thankfully, was reversed in a $50 million restoration in 1989. The building you see here is the oldest section. Reverted back to its 1901 grandeur.
