In an unassuming brown bubbled wrapped mailer, I recently got an unexpected delivery. It was a travel guide which features one of my photographs on the cover. Yes, I knew they were using my picture. I licensed the photo to the publisher earlier in the year. I just didn’t know when they would publish the book.
After seeing one of my photographs online, they contacted me for other possible images. They wanted a colorful night scene in Austin, which is one of my favorite subjects. I probably sent them a half a dozen options.
The photograph they selected is one of my favorites. A hyper vibrant scene on 6th Street, which is Austin’s most famous entertainment district. In fact, I selected this image as my favorite photograph of 2013. Shot with the Olympus E-PM2 with the Panasonic 14mm with wide-angle adapter, it’s a HDR, an old school one, created on tripod.
While there’s no doubt, it’s a wildly colorful photograph, it doesn’t overpower the book. Perhaps it showcases Austin as a young and fun city, which, I guess, is part of its reputation. Hopefully, it will attract attention on the bookshelves and this travel guide will be a big success for them.
